Everyone reading this right now is suffering from childhood trauma. You might not be aware of it but it’s in there, hiding, having a massive impact on how you view yourself, others, the world, your work and your relationships.
Sometimes this trauma is severe. Maybe you were abused sexually, physically or emotionally by an adult. Other times, this trauma is more subtle. Maybe your parent, teacher or coach was overly critical of you. Maybe you constantly felt like you were living in a sibling’s shadow. Maybe you were made fun of by other boys and girls.
Regardless of what your trauma is, it’s imperative that you confront it, head on. Eventually, you must find the courage to say, “I’ve been acting in the following way because of something that happened in my childhood that was completely out of my control and I deserve to be free of that trauma.”
Lastly, as you confront your own trauma, remember that like you and I, most of the hateful humans we run into on a daily basis are just grown-up children, hurting. That’s heartbreaking. But it’s freeing. It gives us permission to be better to ourselves and our fellow humans.
