I keep buying flat whites from this pretty blue-eyed Belarusian girl here in Minsk. She doesn’t speak English and I don’t speak Belarusian. But she smiles at me a lot and waves goodbye when I exit through the back door and on to the city’s cold hard streets. Nothing will come of it because nothing should but she has made my stay here in the last dictatorship of Europe, warmer. She has reminded me to smile and wave more, especially to strangers and I’m deeply thankful for her (and this reminder) even though she keeps messing up my order.

P.S. One day these one minute writings will be a big book called “One Minute, Please.” Can I let you know when that day comes? .
